Here is the story of how the quilt came to be. After seeking
suggestions from QA members, Sally LeBoeuf suggested we do a
traditional pattern in non-traditional fabric and thought
the princess feather design would lend itself to that end.
Traditionally the princess feather is an appliqué done in
red and green. This design was one of the most popular 19th
century appliqué designs. After researching patterns we
found one by Debbie Kratovil. We asked and received
permission from Debbie to use her pattern and very slightly
modified it. Next was the choice of a non-traditional fabric
for this design. We decided on hand dyed fabrics. Judy
Robertson, owner of Just Imagination, was our source for the
fabrics. We chose jewel tones which would literally shine on
an ecru background. The princess feathers are machine
appliquéd. We had ideas that changed many, many times but
finally decided on flying geese as an additional border
around the princess feathers. We wanted the fabric to speak
for itself and felt less was more in this instance. The
quilters who pieced and gave advice during the “birthing
process” are: Sally LeBoeuf, Virginia Anderson, Leanna
Olmsted, and Cathy Katte. The exquisite quilting was done by
Patty Guinn. |
