Kathy Lee

A member of QA since 1989, Kathy Lee has won many ribbons at our shows as well as many of the other exhibits she has entered.  She explains a bit about how she got started and how she works.
When I started quilting in the early '80s, I thought it would be just like sewing one more dress.  Some of my techniques were made up on the fly and, while pretty original, didn't work very well.  I made my first quilt because I wanted to fill up some wall space and couldn't afford to buy one.  It had many mistakes, but I thought I was great.  I also said I would never make another one because of the time involved.  But then here came an idea for another quilt, then another . . . .

Most of my work us used as art in my home, as it is easy to change the quilts instead of redecorating when the mood hits.

When I begin a quilt, I generally have a design idea but as I go along, often it changes.  Sometimes my design is right out of my head; sometimes I start with someone else's pattern but usually end up changing something or combining it with another idea.

My favorite technique has always been appliqué.  It lets me do things that I might not be able to do with straight piecing and the two are also fun to combine.  I usually have several quilts going at the same time.  Even thought they may not be finished in the order they were started, I do end up finishing most of them.
