A member of our guild since 1982, Maurine Noble’s work both as a quilter and a teacher truly represents the spirit of Journeys and Gifts.

Maurine Noble

The author of three bestselling books on machine quilting and machine appliqué, Maurine has inspired many quilters to venture into new territory, smoothing their paths with lessons and advice.  She has traveled widely in the U.S. and as far afield as South Africa, making friends and finding inspiration along the way for her own energetic and playful quilts.

Maurine has been in love with sewing machines for as long as she can remember.  Always interested in finding ways to use a sewing machine to do things typically done by hand, Maurine discovered machine quilting in the late nineteen seventies.

She continued in a career of teaching clothing construction and machine-arts until 1987 when she taught her first class dedicated to machine quilting at In The Beginning.  She soon was asked by That Patchwork Place to try her hand at writing a book on the techniques she was teaching.  The popularity of Machine Quilting Made Easy!, first published in 1994 and still in print, launched Maurine onto the national teaching circuit, a career that has continued until her retirement this year.

As we highlight our guild’s Gifts of Soft Comfort, it seems appropriate that our featured artist protested, upon being invited to participate, that she’s given most of her quilts away!  Maurine’s generous spirit lead her to establish a quilt-making group in her church, guiding both members with experience and those new to quilting to make quilts together.  Calling themselves the Plymouth Piecemakers, this group has now made hundreds of quilts: quilts for congregation members who are facing adversity or who are celebrating new babies and graduations, and many, many quilts for residents and volunteers at Plymouth House, a mental health transitional housing facility.

With a son who teaches elementary school and grandchildren living nearby, it’s not surprising to find Maurine making quilts as school projects.  One of her favorites is here, along with quilts she has made for herself and her family.  You will notice many beautiful hand-dyed fabrics and threads in Maurine’s quilts and class samples.  These were made by her daughter Elin Noble.

We are pleased to present this display to celebrate Maurine’s own journeys and gifts
