Imperial House of Koi
by Maurine Roy - 1st Place |

| I really love oriental fabrics and have quite
a collection. When I went through my stash I
putted out a few fabrics and started to play
with them. This is the result. There is
appliqué, beading, trapunto and piecing on this
quilt. |

I took great creative liberties with this pattern.
The blocks were colored, heat set, and then hand
embroidered. The fence posts in the border were
machine pieced and the barbed wire was done by
machine. All the wild flowers and grasses were
hand embroidered. Many of the buttons used to
embellish this quilt came from a friend's button
jar that had been her grandmother's in the
1920's and 30's. I didn't like one block so I
took it out and drew the thistle block, which I
felt was more "western". This quilt took me 5
years to finish. Most of the embroidery was done
on Interstate 90 while travelling between
Washington and Montana. |

Inspiration was a quilt made by Cassandra Williams
which is in the book, "Diamonds and Beyond" by
Jan Krantz. I used images from Dover books,
rubberstamps and stained glass patterns. |
